B12 Shots

Vitamin B-12 Shots

Facts about Vitamin B12:

  • Aging means we absorb less Vitamin B12 from food. It is estimated 85% of us come up short of the necessary B12 from our diet.
  • Absorption of B12 in food requires a substance from our stomachs called intrinsic factor, which decreases production with age.
  • People with chronic fatigue or anemia require regular injections of vitamin B12 because the oral form is unreliable.
  • Vegetarians (especially vegans) are given shots of B12 since their diet is low in animal products, the primary source of B12.
  • Vitamin B12 shots are most effective when taken at regular intervals (usually weekly or monthly).
  • A regular schedule to receive the injections can be customized to each individual.
  • Deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to abnormal neurologic and psychiatric symptoms including ataxia (shaky movements and unsteady gait), muscle weakness, spasticity, incontinence, hypotension, vision problems, dementia, psychoses, and mood disturbances.

How often can I do the injections?

Vitamin B12 shots are most effective when taken at regular intervals. We recommend once weekly for 4 weeks, followed by once a month. A regular injection schedule can be individualized by your provider.
